What Bribie Does to the Weather

The island is why this is a fishable system on days when the open coast is not.

The Shelter

Bribie sits along the whole eastern side of the passage and takes the swell and most of the sea breeze off it. Inside, you get chop rather than waves even when it is unpleasant outside.

That is the practical value of the place. A twenty-knot southeasterly that shuts down the coast leaves the passage entirely fishable, if slightly uncomfortable.

It Is Not Static

The northern end of the island and the passage entrance have changed shape repeatedly over the decades, and there has been a breakthrough there in recent years. The geography here is genuinely in motion.

Picking Your Side

In a southeasterly, fish the mainland side and let the island do the work. In a northerly, the shelter reverses and the far bank is the comfortable one.

In anything strong from the east, stay inside entirely and do not look at the bar.
